P - Drive

What is the P: drive
The P: drive of the Student Lab Server, Novlab1, is the Burruss Building Computer Labs drive from which students retrieve files or execute programs that their professors have placed there for class use. The drive has a directory structure of the departmental Workgroup Account name and departmental workgroup subdirectories. Professors should provide their students with the path for finding their files or programs. With this information, the Computer Lab Student Assistants can quickly help the students find their work. If unique instructions are needed for access or execution, the professor should also forward a copy of this information to the Information Technology Services Lab Coordinator. The Lab Coordinator notifies the Lab Assistants.

How does an academic department obtain a Workgroup Account?
To obtain this type of access, a department submits a written request to the Information Technology Services Lab Coordinator and provides the name of a departmental primary and backup Point of Contact. I.T.S. establishes a shared account for this workgroup with a volume space of 10M and designates the primary and backup contacts as the Workgroup Coordinators. Instructions for accessing the P: drive and the workgroup password are forwarded to the designated Workgroup Coordinators. Workgroup Coordinators provide instructions to their faculty, oversee their password changes, maintain the license log for their workgroup, coordinate periodic account purges, and serve as liaisons between their workgroup and I.T.S.

Who is responsible for licensing of P: drive programs?
Proper license compliance is the responsibility of the installer. The Workgroup Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a license log for their workgroup. In case of an audit, the Workgroup Coordinator will be asked for this log to show compliance for programs installed within their workgroup. The installer is responsible for supplying the Workgroup Coordinator with a copy of the license and any licensing addendum. Upon license expiration, software must be removed from the system. This includes situations where KSU has been granted use of software based upon a selected textbook. All licensing agreements should be reviewed very carefully to make certain that the software may be installed to a network. If in doubt, consult the Vendor Technical Support or Information Technology Services.

What rights are available on the P: drive?
Workgroup members have read, write, and delete rights to their workgroup subdirectories. Computer lab workstations, i.e. students, only have read or copy access, i.e. they do not have the ability to modify.

Where do I go to get help?
Workgroup members get help from their primary or backup Workgroup Coordinator. The Workgroup Coordinators contact Information Technology Services Lab Coordinator.
