CGI Bins

How can I get a place in the BIN to keep and use my own CGI scripts?

If you have a UNIX account assigned by KSU's Information Technology Services department and have a web page published, you may request an area in the CGI-Bin of your respective system to put your CGI scripts in. Visit our "WHAT?" site for more information on the Common Gateway Interface and how to write scripts, and the Perl language.

Here's how you do it:

  • You must request an area in the CGI-bin for your scripts to be located. To do this, you should use the On-Line CGI-Bin Request Form to submit your request to Sysop for your respective machine on which you will publish web pages.
  • The WebMaster will create an area in the CGI-Bin for you to place your scripts provided you have one of the following:

    Atlas.kennesaw.edu
    Student Account
    www.kennesaw.edu
University Department, Division, or Student Organization
    KSUWeb.kennesaw.edu
    Faculty or Staff Account

  • The WebMaster will check your initial script to make sure it does not violate system security in any way.
  • The WebMaster reserves the right to view all CGI scripts located in the CGI-Bin at at any time to monitor and maintain system security.
  • Violation of these services could result in the locking of the individuals account, expulsion from the system or network, or both.

What will be the URL to my CGI Scripts?

The URL for your CGI scripts will be the one of the following:

If your account is on Atlas your address will be:
http://Atlas.kennesaw.edu/CGI-bin/yourarea/scriptname
Student Account
Where "yourarea" is your user ID
If your account is on KSUWeb your address will be:
http://KSUWeb.kennesaw.edu/cgi-bin/yourarea/scriptname

Faculty or Staff Account
Where "yourarea" is your user ID
If your account is on WWW your address will be:
http://www.kennesaw.edu/CGI-bin/yourarea/scriptname

University Department,
Division, or Student Organization
Where "yourarea" is the name of your dept. or organization

Why are these policies so security conscious?

CGI scripts are inherently security risks because they are able to access and execute critical system files if the CGI script or the web server security mechanism is not set up correctly. This could lead to the elimination of critical personal files for the user or the complete loss of an entire system or network, depending on the level of intrusion. This is why it is the responsibility of every individual on this system, including the ITS WebMaster, to guard against buggy or incorrectly coded scripts and/or incorrect web server settings.
