When you log into your Atlas account, the first thing you come to is the UNIX prompt (this prompt looks like: %). Your Atlas account is now waiting for you to enter a command. To use the e-mail program called pine, at the prompt type: pine and press enter. This will take you to the main menu where many commands are displayed.
Reading Mail: To read a message, highlight Folder List (if necessary, use your up and down arrow keys) and then press enter. To read new messages, with InBox highlighted, press enter. Highlight the message you would like to read and press enter. After reading the message, type m to return to the main menu. Since your InBox is automatically purged of messages older than 30 days, it is recommended that once you have read your mail, you either save it to a folder or delete it from your InBox.
Saving Mail to a Folder: While viewing messages in your InBox, highlight the message you want to save. Type an s to save and then type the name of a folder you want to save it to. If the folder does not exist yet, you will create it as you save a message to it.
Changing Folders: To read messages saved in other folders, choose Folder List from the main menu and highlight the folder you would like to open. Once in that selected folder, to get back into your InBox, type m to return to the main menu. Then choose Folder List again and select your InBox.
To print: To print any message within your e-mail account, from the ITS Computer Lab, simply open the message for reading and press "%" for print (the command is under the Other Commands option). Note that only the open message will print. Notice at the bottom of the screen is denotes that the "print job has been spooled." This means that the message is in the printer and will be printing shortly. When you exit out of Pine totally, the OwlPrint popup box will.
Deleting Mail: With the message you want to delete highlighted, type d (this tags the message for deletion). Your message will not automatically be deleted as you are simply tagging that message. Once you quit pine, answer "yes" (by typing y) to the prompt that says "Expunge the deleted messages?" and all messages tagged for deletion will be deleted at that time.
Mailing a Message: Choose Compose a Message from the main menu. Follow the prompts:
To: type the e-mail address of the person you are sending the message to and then press enter.
Cc: type the e-mail addresses of any other people you would like to receive a copy of this message (if more than one other person, separate the addresses by a comma) and then press enter.
Attachment: any file attachments you do will be displayed here.
Subject: type the subject of the message and then press enter.
You should now be able to type in the body of your message. To send the message, hold down the Ctrl + x. Answer yes (by typing y) to the message "Send message?" Your message is now being sent.
Quitting pine: At the main menu, type q to quit (don't press enter). Answer yes (by typing y) to the message "Really quit pine?" To properly close your Atlas account, at the prompt (%) type exit.
