1 - General Questions:
1.1) I had a Atlas account last year; do I need to apply for a new one?
Answer:
Once approved, Atlas accounts stay active as long as the student is enrolled at Kennesaw State University and there are no violations or misuse of the account. The account is terminated if the user abuses the account or if the student is not enrolled for two or more consecutive quarters.
1.2) I have an account with an online service provider, How do I access my Atlas e-mail account provided by KSU?
Answer:
There are two different ways to access your Atlas:
- Pine
- POP (Post Office Protocol)
1.3) What is the difference between my home directory and my mail directory?
Answer:
When you log in, you should see a /home + your login name. This area of the system is called your home directory. This is the place where you and only you have rights to unless you give others access to it. This is where you store your work on Atlas, etc. THIS IS YOUR AREA!!!
When you use an e-mail program, it creates a subdirectory in your home directory to store your mail. The "pine" program creates a subdirectory named "mail".
1.4) How much space is allocated for my home directory?
Answer:
Each Atlas user is allocated 25MB of space for their home directory.
1.5) If I need help who do I ask?
Answer:
The best way to obtain help is by accessing our Atlas On-Line Help System. You can also read through the answers to the Frequently Asked Questions.
If these sources do not provide the help you need, you may email sysop or you may ask an Information Technology Services' Computer Lab Assistant located in the ITS Computer Lab, BB475.

2 - Logins:
2.1) What is my login name?
Answer:
Your "login name" is the name that you use to identify yourself to the machine to which you are connecting. By typing in your login name, you let UNIX know who you are, and to what files and services you have access. This prevents others from being able to erase your files, send e-mail to the President of the United States from you, etc.
3 - Passwords:
3.1) What is my initial/default password?
Answer:
On Atlas, it is our standard to make your initial password the first four letters of your login name, followed by the last four digits of your student identification number. NOTE: Your initial password is exactly that, an initial password. Atlas will force you to change your initial password the first time you log into the system.
3.2) How do I change my password?
Answer:
To change your password from a UNIX prompt, type passwd at the UNIX prompt (%). NOTE: The command to use is passwd, not "password". You will be prompted on what to next. A quick summary of what will happen follows:
- You type passwd
- You will be prompted to type your old password
- You will be prompted to type a new password. The new password must be at least 6 characters long and contain at least two alphabetic characters (a, A, b, B, etc). In addition, the password must contain at least one numeric or special character (1, 2, @, #, etc). The password must differ from the user's login name and any reverse or circular shift of that login name. Each time your change your password, it must differ from your last password by at least 3 characters
- You will be prompted to enter the new password again to confirm your selection. Once entered, if the two passwords you typed match, you have successfully changed your password! If not, the prompt will say that the two don't match and ask you to try again. In that event, just type passwd and start all over!
3.3) What if I forgot my password?
Answer:
Atlas users will need to complete a "maintenance request" form available in the Information Technology Services' Computer Lab located in BB475 to have their password reset.
